CES is arguably the most important electronics trade show of the year. As every year, Zenterio attended the show in Las Vegas and we have had a very exciting time meeting many partners, customers and people from the industry, and of course evaluating all the latest and greatest technology innovations that were showcased.
The TV experience (in the form of linear channels, live TV or any video content consumed in front of a big screen in the living room) is just one of many different ways that are now available to consume video content and get entertained. Similarly, the TV set as a device is also not dominant any longer; as the “first screen”, it is still the one where video content can be enjoyed at its best, but usage patterns and statistics show that the other screens are slowly eroding TV’s dominance.
TV operators have to embrace this trend and make sure their offering is not identified solely with the TV set and the TV screen, because that might be seen as a limitation.
Smart Home, not new as a concept, seems to be really taking off now thanks to IoT and innovations like voice control. Solutions are far from perfect in this area, but it seems that the times are mature to create products and services that can be really useful for consumers (not only for techies). This is a great opportunity for TV operators and telcos, who already have great relationships with subscribers and have gained their trust over the years. The fifth play, as it is called, is the most interesting area adjacent to broadband and TV business right now. Different approaches are possible, where the TV can be just a good citizen in the Smart Home environment, or can actually be the central control point for the Smart Home, but we do expect to see a lot of innovation and investment in this area going forward.
We’d love to hear your comments if you have been at CES and/or want to discuss the latest trends, and how Zenterio can help you.
